Interview: Summer School graduate reflects on their experience

Every year, we welcome over 30 students from around the globe to UWC Atlantic in South Wales for our popular 10-day Summer School. We chatted to 2023 graduate, Salvador Zettelmann from Argentina all about his experience taking the course.

Salvador, you took part in our Summer School last year. What made you sign up?

“I work for international maritime and humanitarian organisation, SOS Mediterranee, on their search and rescue team. I’d heard about the Atlantic Pacific Summer School from some colleagues and an Atlantic Pacific instructor who I met out on the field. I wasn’t aware of any training in SAR within the context of the humanitarian crisis in the Mediterranean Sea. And because I’m always keen to keep learning, it seemed like the perfect opportunity.”

That’s great – we’re glad you found us! What did you learn during your time at the Summer School?

“We got to be out on the water every day, driving boats and learning interesting rescue techniques. But we also had a good amount of time for theoretical classes on land. This was also my first time driving tilt engine RHIBs – it was a lot of fun, and to my surprise, it wasn’t as easy as I was expecting.”

Sounds like you were kept very busy. What did you enjoy most?

“The other students – who were mostly from other NGOs – were super friendly and the instructors were very dedicated. The location was awesome, with lots of nature and scenery. And the Bristol Channel had massive tidal currents, making it a brilliant spot for the training programme. I also enjoyed the early morning barefoot runs on the beach with Mich!”

Would you recommend the Summer School to others?

“Most definitely. It’s an intense ten days and there’s lots of information to learn and new skills to develop. It can be tough, especially for people new to SAR. But it’s really worth it.”
