The training you get can be used for lifesaving everywhere, whether for work, volunteering, or in day-to-day life and qualifies you for HSE First Aid at Work certification, which is valid for 3 years.

What’s it like?

Our 6 night residential course teaches lifesaving skills while giving you a unique, fun experience with other people around your age, by the sea, in the stunning castle grounds of UWC Atlantic. 

That said, we absolutely welcome anyone not necessarily seeking a career in those areas, if you are looking for a fun, challenging and memorable experience.

Signing up demonstrates a well-rounded, adventurous and open-minded approach to life and learning.  Previous happy customers tell us their experiences helped build their confidence and opened up new opportunities with careers and further education. 

Every day is a mixture of interactive workshops and outdoor sessions on a beautiful campus, as well as time every evening free to enjoy as you choose. 

The course is intense and deals with information about the body and trauma. Please be prepared for a full-on 5 days of learning that is challenging but enjoyable. 

What will I learn?

Throughout the course you take daily workshops that gradually build your first aid skills and knowledge, alongside engaging lectures from medical professionals working in diverse sectors of medicine and humanitarian rescue.

Our team of experts share their personal experiences and offer insights into the realities of working as a medic, doctor or emergency responder. They share the personal journeys that have led them everywhere from NHS A&E departments to remote challenging locations across the world to deliver emergency care. 

These insights show you what it’s like to work in high pressure rewarding environments while you explore options for training, medical courses and university programs. You will also experience some simulated rescue scenarios, on land and in the outdoor pool that put your knowledge to the test.

Meals 

Breakfast, lunch & dinner are served by the friendly UWC catering team in the incredible dining hall of St Donat’s Castle, the longest continually inhabited castle in Wales.

Accommodation 

You will stay in comfortable dorm style houses which you can see on the website of our hosts UWC Atlantic College. Girls and boys are divided across two separate floors. There is one communal shower area per floor, with private cubicles for showering and toilets. There are up to 4 students sleeping in one room. Accommodation including all bedding is included in the course fee.

Who can apply 

You must be either 16 or 17 years old for the duration of the course. 

Due to safeguarding policies we require you to provide proof of age for this course, with a passport or ID card. 

Arrival & departure times 

This is a 5 day 6 night residential course. Please arrive on Sunday 4th August between 3pm – 5pm and depart on the morning of Saturday 10th August.

You must be dropped off and collected at the college by a legal guardian or nominated representative.

Fees 

The course costs £1,100 which includes accommodation, bedding and 3 meals per day, training and all equipment.  

We have some 50% and 80% discounted scholarships available to help with costs. Please select which scholarship you would like when completing the application form. 

What to bring 

All equipment is provided and included in the fee.  This includes wetsuits, buoyancy aids and helmets.

Disclaimer

The course teaches you how to give lifesaving treatment to people who are injured. Graphic images of injuries are shown (with adequate warning) and traumatic or difficult situations are discussed. Please be prepared to cover these subjects.

We do not provide indemnity cover for students who go on to use casualty care after this course, unless you are deployed as one of our assets.

Activities include 

Daily Casualty Care training sessions (teaching you first aid)

Workshops 

  • Exploring university & career routes into medicine

  • Learning about working in these specialisms:

    • The Ambulance Service 

    • In disaster zones & remote regions

    • As an A&E doctor or paramedic 

    • In sea-based search & rescue 

Pool based training 

  • Practice rescue scenarios used in sea-based search & rescue 

Free time 

  • From 5pm onwards each day: take time for yourself to relax, enjoy the grounds and seafront

Qualification 

On successful completion of the course, you will receive an Atlantic Pacific Casualty Care certification, valid for 3 years.  This training can be used for lifesaving everywhere, whether for work, volunteering, or in day-to-day life.

Exam 

To complete the first aid/casualty care qualification exam, you will take practical hands on assessments and a final multiple-choice questionnaire. 

Course Materials 

We provide specially designed aide-memoire check cards (that help aid your memory in emergency situations), all medical kit and personal protective equipment.
